EECP development history

The history of the development of EECP in China is a journey from introduction, innovation, to global leadership.The following are the major stages of its development:

Phase I: Introduction and Initial Exploration (Late 1960s-Early 1980s)

Background:The incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in China began to rise, but effective non-invasive treatment options were very limited. China began to import advanced medical technologies from abroad.

In the 1960s, China introduced early ECP technology from the United States. These devices were non-sequential water-compression counter pulsation devices, it means the lower limbs were inflated and deflated simultaneously by water.The treatment effect is not very good,preventing widespread use.

Phase II: Technological Breakthroughs and "Chinese Innovation" (1980s-Early 1990s)

Core Innovation: A team at Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences, led by Professor Zheng Zhensheng, successfully developed the Enhanced External Counter pulsation (EECP) device.

Technological Innovations:

Sequential Compression: An innovative sequential compression method, from the calf to the thigh and then to the buttocks, significantly improves aortic diastolic pressure and treatment effects.

The water-compression mode was replaced with a air pressure mode.Lower noise,more comfortable and,and facilitated device widespread use.

Phase III: Clinical Validation and Domestic Promotion (1990s)

Clinical Research: With the maturity of the EECP device, several major hospitals in China (such as the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences) began conducting large-scale clinical studies, accumulating a wealth of clinical data.

Applications: Research has confirmed that EECP has significant therapeutic effects on conditions such as coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, and heart failure. As a safe, effective, and non-invasive physical therapy, it is gradually gaining acceptance in the domestic medical community.

Phase 4: Globalization and International Recognition (Late 1990s - Early 2000s)

MUST-EECP Study: The first multicenter, randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial of EECP for the treatment of stable angina, conducted collaboratively by Chinese and American scientists. Its positive results were presented at the 1999 American College of Cardiology (ACC) Annual Meeting and published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC).

Guideline Inclusion:

2002: The American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology (AHA/ACC) included EECP in its clinical guidelines for the treatment of coronary artery disease and chronic stable angina.

2003: The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) also included it in its clinical guidelines.

Since then, EECP has officially become a standard, non-invasive treatment recognized by mainstream medical circles worldwide.

Phase Five: Continued Advancement and Widespread Application (Early 21st Century to Present)

Expanding Indications:

Application has expanded beyond coronary artery disease to include:

ischemic heart failure

ischemic cerebrovascular disease

sudden deafness

male erectile dysfunction, and other areas, demonstrating its broad therapeutic potential.

China maintains a leading position in the EECP field, not only as the largest market but also as the leading technology exporter.The vast majority of EECP devices worldwide are produced by Chinese companies.

How Omay started EECP

Omay medical was founded by Dr.Zhou Shao Chun.EECP is a very good and non-invasive physical therapy device for the treatment of angina,but faced a shortage of manufacturers in China.

Dr.Zhou ShaoChun,a pioneer in EECP field,studies his doctorate under Pro.Zheng zhensheng from 1996 to 1998.He not only conducted clinical research with him but also participated in the development of MC-3 EECP device,which was exported to Vasomedical,USA.

He also participated in the MUST-EECP multicenter trial and has published dozens of EECP-related academic papers.To expand the benefits of this technology to more patients.Dr.Zhou co-founded Omay Medical in 2008 as both technical director and partner.
