EECP Principle:

EECP machine is triggered by patient's heart beat.While doing EECP treatment,Patient will be lying on the bed and cuffs wrapped around lower limbs,The EECP bed includes a pressure source that inflates and deflates these cuffs.The pressure moves the blood from lower limbs toward theheart.Each wave of pressure is timed with your heart beat via ECG signal.So that the increased blood flow is delivered to heart at the precise moment when heart relaxing.When heart pumps again,the pressure in cuffs is withdrawn immediately,so that blood pumped more easily from the heart.

EECP just like an external heart,two hearts work for patient.Greatly increases blood perfusion and blood supply to vital organs.

Most patients experienced a significant reduction in angina and improvement in quality of life after EECP therapy,and this reduction was sustained in most patients at 2 -year follow-up.Patients reported a significant decrease in the frequency of angina and nitroglycerin use.The sustained 2 year benefit of EECP seen in this registry are consistent with reports from previous clinical trials and observational studies.

Q:How will i know if a collaterals has formed after EECP treatment?

A:Patient after undergoing 35 days of EECP treatment would improve the blood supply to their heart muscle.So even they have multiple blocks,the blood now can flow across the blocks artery by forming a new vessel,and this is also called collateral vessels.So how was a patient i can know that this collateral vessel has form after 35 days of EECP treatment.First is subject to your assessment.So the patient now should walk more distance and all his cardiac condition,all his clinical symptoms which he had before like lack of sleep,lack of appetite,shortness of breath,chest pain,unable to walk, short distant or even routine activities causing discomfort.All this symptoms should reduce or complete eliminate after 35 days of treatment.This is the evidence to show that blood flow has been restored.

Another way to know is as a physician,if you want to know clearly whether this collateral has developed and blood flow has been improved.Then a simply echo cardiograph.In some patient,where the heart function is not adequate,the pumping is not adequate because of lack of  blood flow,then after 35 days of treatment.They can see the pumping efficacy is significantly improved.

Secondly,it’s myocardial perfusion scan or SPET Nuclear scan,before the patient start EECP,we can do a nuclear scan,to assess whether there is a deficiency of your blood flow,then after completing 35 days EECP treatment,the patient can be subject to undergo the same nuclear scan again,now we can able to show the improvement in the blood flow to the area where there is a deficiency before.

Or we can do a simple treadmill,before the treatment,the patient may able to do 5 to 6 minutes treadmill and there is a significantly change the ECG.Now after complete the EECP treatment,the same patient can able to perform many longer duration and sometime you may not able to see any changes in the ECG even if you are set in the max level,that’s show that the blood flow has been significantly improve.

So all this test can able to show by doing 35 days of EECP treatment,there is a increase blood flow has happen to the myocardial and this increased blood flow to the heart muscle is achieve is because what we call collateral circulation.
